Instructions

  1. Browse the Freedom on the Move database. Make sure to read a few advertisements for both women and men, old and young, etc. (Note you can search and filter the data on the site.)

  2. Select one advertisement and rewrite it from the perspective of the fugitive(s). Copy the image and your rewrite here. Note: your answers will be added to this site.

  3. Discuss (and have on member of your group take notes):

How does this database compare to others we’ve examined in this course? What are the implications of these differences?

What systems of exploitation and control were fugitives resisting? Be specific; identify the particular aspects of enslavement which enslaved people were challenging.

What tools did fugitives use to resist bondage? Your answers can be literal (e.g. boats, weapons, etc.) and/or conceptual (community, kinship, spatial knowledge, etc.)

How do you practice fugitivity? What are you disrupting, challenging, resisting and/or defying? Why? What are your tools?
